The Need

ARE Telecom was contracted by a private company in coastal French Guiana to provide design consulting, manufacturing, logistics, and installation of 4 patent-pending Assembled Foundation Systems with monopoles for a wind power project.

Overview

ARE Telecom created a AFS 1700 ballasted foundation that would support a 100’ wind tower with a 20kW hummer wind turbine. Due to the unknown soil conditions of the site, the foundation and monopole solution was designed to utilize flexible and reusable equipment, accommodate below grade installation requiring no concrete, exceed the wind requirements for tower and turbine stability.

Project Benchmarks

  • Crew flexibility and equipment availability allowing for installation under challenging conditions
  • Leverage local soil for ballast
  • On-site technical installations

Project Resources

  • 3-person crew
  • 1 day
  • Skid-steer
  • Telehandler

Challenges

  • Limited space and access
  • Significant logistics planning
  • Quickly and efficiently deployed in 1 day

1 Create Pit

Create base layer pit for system

2 Foundation

Stage foundation near pit, and assemble upper chord sections

3 Base Pits

Compact and level pits using local material

4 Crane

A crane is used to place the foundation in the pit and erect the pole

5 Set Pole Sections

Set pole base section onto leveling nuts

6 Ballast

Dirt is added for ballast and compacted
